Alpacas and Llamas

For animals that are quasi-ruminant with 3 stomachs, fibre is an important part of their diet. A plentiful supply of good quality hay or pasture must be available at all times and animals should be allowed to eat this to appetite at all times.

Alpacas and Llamas originally came from areas with high selenium soils, which makes them predisposed to selenium deficiency where soil levels are low such as in Australia. Vitamin E works in synergy with selenium for good immunity and health.

Barastoc Alpaca Pellet contains both an organic selenium source and Vitamin E. This feed also contains a good vitamin and mineral profile for health, reproduction, skin and fleece condition.

Barastoc Alpaca Pellet is suitable for both alpaca and llama and contains the right balance and levels of protein and energy for growth, breeding, and lactation. Furthermore, Barastoc Alpaca Pellet is pelletised for ease of handling and to minimize feed wastage.

Feeding Guide for Alpacas and Llamas

Alpacas and Llamas prefer to be fed at ground level and to be fed individually in troughs.

Animals should not be fed in a confined area and you should provide ample space for individual animals to feed properly. It is important to adapt Alpacas to Barastoc Alpaca Pellets so it is recommended that feed intake be increased gradually over a two to three week period to minimise the risk of acidosis (grain poisoning). When feeding hay, ensure that it is fed at ground level to avoid fleece contamination and damage.

The above feeding rates are only a guide, consideration of the Alpacas general body condition, stage of pregnancy or lactation and environmental conditions such as pasture availability will effect feed requirements.

For best management practice do not feed more than 0.5 kilogram of Barastoc Alpaca pellets per meal to Adult Alpaca or Llama, and no more than 0.25 kilograms per meal to young and growing animals.
